Printing Services - Over The Years

By: Beth Smith

The popularity of print medium as an effective way of distributing information to many different kinds of individuals is great & famous even in the present days. With the passage of time the printing services industry has grown vastly & has evolved to its current form of a varied industry. Today it addresses a wide range of needs of clients, which goes much more than printing.

With the invention of the world's first printing press by Gutenberg in the--00's, mass printing services in the form of relief printing developed into a full fledged industrial service. A slight projection of the printed matter from the background, like in a rubber stamp, is a key feature of relief printing. Nowadays relief printing is not as popular and has very limited uses.

Technology has always been a driving force behind changes in printing processes that have been adopted down the years. There are various kinds of printing methods available today and each has its own role and function. The sheer variety of available options in printing techniques in fact greatly confuses the customers.

One of the most popular printing methods in the industry today is offset printing. This method uses a limited amount of ink to print the matter on metal plates first and then it transmits it onto paper. This cheap and quick method of printing is highly preferred and used when mass printing is needed.

Evolution in printing technology has also introduced other printing methods like thermal printing, that involves heating of coated thermal paper, and electrostatic printing, that is akin to photocopying.

However, the latest revolution in printing industry is digital printing. As is clear from its name, it includes image creation and manipulation on a computer, and then this computer generated image is finally printed after review. But this fast and trustworthy technique works best in situations where only a small number of prints is needed. As this method allows each print to be modified it has resulted in some novel uses like computer form printing, where items like invoices and receipts are printed on a standard layout but with varying contents for each client.

Another significant evolution in printing has dawned with the arrival of the internet. There are many firms in the market now, who allow you to place orders and modify prints straight through their websites, which is providing excellent convenience to the customers.

Technological advancements have always brought about important positive changes in printing methods and the quality of the prints. The good news is that this trend is not going to halt in the coming years and you will keep seeing changes bring down the costs and improve the process.
