How To Make Arrangements For A Funeral Service

By: Ramon Silva

Death is a certainty and yet we plan so little for it. Honouring the dead is a very old practice that has been constantly changing to suit the modern times. Conventionally, a funeral service was carried out in church and the departed was bid farewell with readings from scriptures as well as a eulogy. However, as more people people are looking forward to personalized funeral services, the practice has undergone change over the last few decades.

Organizing a funeral could be a very painful and hard task, especially right after the death of a relative or someone close. A general myth that a funeral service is a legal requirement is incorrect as no law makes it compulsory to hold a funeral service. Secondly, many people hold the belief that a service has to be organized in a church, which is again untrue. It is to be noted that even though traditionally such services were carried out in a church, with the trend of personalizing, a lot of funeral services are being held within the premises of the deceased. Thirdly, such a personalized service does not require use of a casket or even a pastor or clergy to conduct the proceedings.

But, keeping in line with the idea of a personal funeral service, a lot of thought should be given to the preferences of the dead person. Music, must be something that is soft, soothing and from the personal favourites of the deceased. You have the choice of playing recorded music or engaging a live music band.

Some families prefer putting up the personal items of the dead person in a collage, for the persons assembled to reflect on his or her life. It is also crucial to include an address in the service in form of a speech, poem or a song dedicated to the departed by a close friend or family member.

Last but not the least, it is essential to give a memento to people who attend the funeral service, so that they can remember the dead person forever.
